Weihnachtsvorbereitungen

Hallo,

Hola,

I am back a last time before my first Christmas. Today, I went to the capital of the mighties nation on the mightiest planet of the mighty world. Nevertheless, it was raining cats and dogs and it was warm as if it were April. Mama and Papa followed the Peschel rule 'There is no bad weather only bad clothing" and dragged me (well actually pushed me) to the National Tree. The tree is even uglier than on the pictures and I am sure it is going to win all three competitions 'Uglies Christmas Tree', 'Worst Hannukah Tree', and 'Ugliest Kwanzaa Tree'.
Afterwards, I saw even more water when I was allowed to take a bath. I think my singing is good but not yet at my cousins' level.

®obbie

Sorry people,

I have been quiet for a while - first I had to celebrate my first Halloween. I went as a Pumpkin and I think I did a marvelous job. Especially my backend looked pretty scary, didn't it?

And then, once Halloween was over, I had my next "First". This time it was my first Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, my parents decided that it would be terrific to have me hunt the turkey - dead or alive. Only problem was: walking hasn't been that high on my agenda for the past 6 months. So I decided to catch the turkey with a more low-level approaching strategy. You can see me here on one of the practice runs we did:

And here you can see me on my very first Thanksgiving.
I made a fabulous Mile-High-Apple Pie, you can see the spoon still in my hands:

And once the party was over, I happily enjoyed my first Budweiser (and for the ignorant among you, it was the real Budweiser).

OK, I have been quiet for a while. The reason is simple: I had, yet again, a moving experience. My parents and I moved from Massachusetts to Maryland. The added benefit is that I don't have to use the spellchecker every single time I write my home state (and yes, that's why Wyoming and Mississippi lost out).
Anyways, October 14 was the big day, we drove from MA to DE where we stayed overnight. Papa was driving the ugly U-Haul with all my belongings and Mama our fashionable Corolla. At one of our pit stops, a huge SUV with a beautiful trailer parked right next to it. The trailer itself contained a 1959 Triumph. The driver was a sporty mid sixty man and his mid twenty, I assume girlfriend , went to her own little pit stop. So I started chatting and it turned out that he was Bavarian, from Garmisch. He was on his way from Vermont to Virginia (one state up in the alphabet) to drive in a rally. His residence however was not Vermont, no it was the Bahamas. I got the typical 'I love Europe and I am moving back soon. I go to Italy once a year to drive in a rally. Oh Germany is so small and everything is so narrow. I can't live there anymore -it would have to be Italy'. I thought: 'Yes and they do have cops in Germany, from all I say on my first trip in September, now how bad would that bad to your little pile of money in the Bahamas'.

Our house in Silver Spring is adorable, it's bright, in a lovely neighborhood, and most importantly, I have my own box-free room. The only quibble was my Papa and Mama's little fight with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Hamp-shire. We needed to switch to the PPO plan since the HMO won't cover outside of New England. In order to get my six-month vaccination, Mama wanted to set up an appointment with a new pediatrician. Now the interesting part is that we need the insurance number to set up an appointment. So Papa called Anthem and asked if he can somehow get the new number since the application was just being submitted and processed:

MK: We just moved from MA to MD and I would like to set up an appointment with a new pediatrician for my daughter. I was told it will take up to four weeks to get the new number and then four weeks to get an appointment. That would out us into her 8th month - is there nothing you can do, like giving me that new number over the phone or an out of state referral?
Anthem Man: Well, why don't you just go to a doctor in Massachusetts?
MK: Ahem, we just moved to Maryland...
AM: And the point being?
MK: (Silence)
AM: It's not that far from Maryland to MA, is it?
MK: Well, it's twelve hours with an infant if you stop in between, seems a little far for three shots.
AM: Is it really that far?
MK: Yeeeeeees.
AM: Wow
MK: (Silence)
AM: I see [must have picked up a map]. It's south of New York, isn't it?
MK: Sort of
AM: Wow
MK: (Silence)
AM: Would Rhode Island be any better?
MK: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
MK: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
MK: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
MK: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
MK: [J, Mary and Joseph, what on earth is wrong with that bloke?] Well, it would chop off an hour or so, so we are down to nine to eleven hours, so not really
AM: Really?
MK: May I ask you something? Where are you located? [expecting anything between Hawaii and Alaska as an answer]
AM: New Hampshire

Maybe there is a reason why they have income taxes in some states....

In the meantime, I have met our good friends from Annapolis and Baltimore and Alexandria and I love the urban environment and the diversity. As a matter of fact, I love it so much that I started making my propeller sound with a melody and one day Mama and Papa will tape it and put it up on this website.

Dr. K: Schon......
ABC: Wäre Rhode Island besser?
Dr. K: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
Dr. K: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
Dr. K: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
Dr. K: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
Unwesentlich besser also...
ABC: Really?
Dr. K: Yes
ABC: [Schweigen]
Dr. K: [Schweigen]
ABC: [Schweigen]
Dr. K: [Schweigen]
ABC: [Schweigen]
Dr. K: Wo sitzen Sie denn eigentlich?
ABC: Ich bin in New Hampshire.

On Sunday, we went to the Pharmacist World Championship, vulgo Road World Championship. I was admitted to watch it without much ado and doping test after the back and forthing of the previous week. What we saw was that the Code of Honor Voider Paulo B. from Italy won and how the local favorite Stefan Schuhmacher, born in Ruit (!) finished 3rd.
The same day, Germany won the historic Nobody-Can-Score-Against-Us Soccer World Cup. What team shall I play for in 2027 - the US or Germany?

Then on Tuesday, my Papa had to watch the Champions League game Stuttgart-Barcelona sitting on the floor in the Parkgastätte in Tübingen since the Irish Pub decided to have a Pub Quiz that same day.

Emily Talking About the State of the VfB

Sodele, we are back. Our travel to the edge of the civilized world - the Weißwurstäquator - is over - finito. We visited my Bäsle and looked at the edge of the known world: Offenbach. It was kind if ironic that it rained for two days in a row and once came closer to the centre of the world (due south of Heilbronn), the weather became gorgeous again.

I would like to give you an example what the basic characteristi of the Swabians is. The
Ländle would apply to become adoptive mother of Calvinism if Switzerland ever were to give up that title. They are currently redoing the main street through Hedelfingen, a quarter in Stuttgart. In order to justify wasting money, they put up signs similar to the ones in the States: Your taxes help paying a bridge over the nesting area of the three-nosed toad. Or: We are building a see-proof scenic view. Hedelfingen on the other hand shows that the Swabians like to make their life more difficult themselves: We are building for you: A Hindered Cross-Town Express Through Hedelfingen. Well - they are honest here, aren't they?

Wir sind wieder da

Hallole,

Hallole,

I am back - Papa is finally taking two weeks off, so I have to keep him busy. Yesterday, we went to Tübingen where we did not only see the famous Hölderlinturm, we also saw the Stocherkahnfahrer. And then we saw the world's fastest Bus and I took my first real bus ride.

A couple of questions are still to be answered: Amelie - who I really have no clue who she is - askedabout the Bodens-Crocodile: That's Fridolin.
A friend in MD asked what Emily im Ländle means.
The short answer: It's my name and my location. The long answer: My Papa's hometown, Stuttgart, is the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The nice part is Württemberg and that's where the brain and money sits. We don't need to worry too much about the Baden part. In Württemberg, we make things smaller than they are - you can call it Grounding. One way to do it is by diminishing items by adding an -le at the end: ein Haus (house) becomes a Häusle and ein Auto becomes an Autole. And a Land (state) becomes a Ländle. That way, everybody knows what state people talk about. And Hallo (hello) becomes Hallole.

Now I am back to keep Papa busy, I will be back with more answers when we have rainy days.

Bodensee

Miss Emily Antwortet

Yesterday, oh yesterday, a great Altweibersommer-Tag. We made a family excursion to the Bodensee. It was my first speedy trip on the notorious Autobahn - I slept throughout most of the trip. The destination was the house Glück am See (Happiness on the Lake) where my uncle Wolfgang and Gitti are currently spending their well deserved vacation.
We had a lovely Barbie with German pork neck and
Rote vom Grill (a real sausage, that actually tastes likes one). I was allowed to watch but not to eat any of the fun stuff, I am still on the high-fat-milk diet that is claimed to be so healthy. Oh well, the end of the barbie was shortened because Papa and Wolfgang decided to run over to a camping ground where they could watch some Formula 1. After that, three brave people jumped into the water, some more brave (W&G) than others (P), though I prefer a less brave P than a flash frozen one.
Anyways, after that, more food for the so called grown ups: Kaffee und Kuchen. In a nutshell: Brave people in car races and food - that was my Sunday.

Miss Emily Responds:
Johannes asked about the rental services for the stroller: It is A&K Rentals in Hesse - prices are unbeatable, the maintenance is ok.
Rachael inquired about the stroller and cars: Yes, we can add a European car as a trailer to
the stroller, there is a hook-up. And please don't insult me, I am tri-lingual already, the bi-lingual phase has been over for months: German, English, and Schwäbisch.

BTW: You can click on the pictures and watch me in HD.

Miss Emily Responds

Dear Friend in NH,
You raise a very good point. I have studied and practiced for three months now to pass the German driver's test. Tomorrow, I have my written exam at 9 a.m. and then the road test at 10 a.m. I am a little bit nervous though, the traffic is much faster than in the Granite State. They do not have moose though - you know those big, green, slimy animals that run around on the streets near Mount D.C.
On that same topic, I can reassure My Friend in MD: Stroller and Autobahn are not mutually exclusive, as you can see on the picture, my stroller (courtesy of my cousin A.) is almost as big as the thing they call car here in Old Europe.

As far as the question from my friend in NV is concerned: I do a lot of business here, but I am not sure people would call it a business trip.

I will respond to the other questions from my friend in MD later this week. I am quite hungry now.

As Time Goes By

Alors, all three of us are almost completely adjusted to the new time zone here: six hours ahead of East Coast Time - and even Emily found her rhythm - knock on wood. BTW time: Dutch precision failed us. When we departed Amsterdam, the flight deck announced that the trip will be about one hour and two minutes. It turned out to be 58 minutes.
Today, Emily had two
firsts: First time in a Stadtbahn (aka the cleanest metro in the world) and first time in the cleanest capital of the world: St. Uttgart.
BTW: Feel free to comment (click on Comments) and ask Emily question. She has her hours every day from 8-10 a.m. where she answers questions.

Da stand sie schon vor uns: die deutscheste aller KLM Angestellten: Hurry up, all people are waiting for you und zeigte auf die Reinigungscrew.

All went well, Emily slept for about 5 1/2 hours of the 6 1/2 hour flight. The parents each slept 5 1/2 minutes. KLM, which shipped us from Amsterdam to Stuttgart were kind enough to also include a belt for Emily and a third oxygen mask in our hefty price for a lap seat when we have a lack of pressure (I thought about a rotating mask system when NWA showed tha safety instruction movie). Our neighbor then pointed out to the KLM attendant that he hopes she means if and not when. BTW: he was American.
On the other hand, a KLM employee gave us a warm welcome to Europe: When we arrived in Amsterdam, we waited for everybody to disembark and then pack all of our belongings quietly. I apologized to the nice NWA attendant and he said we shouldn't rush and we are doing great compared to other parents. And then the little KLM angel stood right before us.
HURRY UP, EVERYBODY IS WAITING FOR YOU and she pointed at the cleaning crew. I bit my tongue and did not point out that the NWA flight is none of her bloody business. And I also kindly ignored the fact that thanks to our great performance when boarding the plane, we were still 15 minutes ahead of the time when we were supposed to land. Oh well: WELCOME TO THE EU.

The E. has landed. Eltern erschöpft, Tochter wohlauf. Tomorrow we will write more about our trip and Dutch precision but for now, we will listen to the pillow.

Hallole,
